Austria triumph as Germany, Iceland impress

The regular friendly tournaments in the first week of March produced titles for the United States, Canada and Austria while Sweden were qualifying for the Olympics.

  • Canada won the Algarve Cup with Iceland an impressive third
  • Austria lifted the Cyprus Women's Cup

UEFA OLYMPIC QUALIFIER
Sweden
finished ahead of the Netherlands, Switzerland and Norway to take the last available slot in Brazil this August in the 12-team women's football tournament. France and Germany had already qualified.

#SHEBELIEVES CUP
Germany
led through Anja Mittag but in the end lost 2-1 to hosts the United States in Boca Raton, Florida to decide the inaugural tournament. Germany beat France 1-0 and England 2-1 with late winners; the US registered 1-0 victories against both to set up the decider. England drew 0-0 with France to claim third place.

ALGARVE CUP
With several regulars in this tournament absent at the two events above, a new title winner was guaranteed in the 23rd edition. Canada overcame Brazil 2-1 in the final after both topped their groups. Iceland, pipped 1-0 to the final by Canada, defeated New Zealand for bronze 6-5 on penalties after a 1-1 draw. Belgium warmed up for next month's vital UEFA Women's EURO qualifier in England as they saw off Russia 5-0 for fifth having previously beaten Denmark, who defeated hosts Portugal 3-1 to come seventh.

CYPRUS CUP
The previous eight editions had been won by either Canada, England and France, meaning Austria were able to put their name on the trophy with a 2-1 victory against Poland, courtesy of an 89th-minute goal by Katharina Schiechtl. Italy had been held 0-0 by Austria to end up second in their group but beat the Czech Republic 3-1 for bronze.

ISTRIA CUP
The youngest of the three regular March tournaments in Europe was won by Poland last year but this time the competition in Croatia had no finals day, instead being played as two separate groups. Hungary B beat Northern Ireland and Slovakia to top Group A despite a loss to hosts Croatia, who had been defeated by the other two sides. The US U23 team beat France B and Slovenia either side of a draw with Poland U20 to top Group B.
