Spain won their third UEFA European Women's Under-17 Championship after an early strike by Lucía García, own goals from Luisa Felder and Naomi Mégroz, Carmen Menayo's long-range fourth and Lorena Navarro's tap-in proved enough to see off Switzerland 5-2 in Saturday's final in Reykjavik.

Pedro López's team made an irresistible start to the Valsvöllur showpiece and found the target twice in the opening 13 minutes through García and Felder's unfortunate deflection. Typically of this tournament, final debutants Switzerland were much improved in the second half and restored pride with a fine Geraldine Reutler effort. However, that was not before another Swiss mishap from a Spanish set piece, this one involving Mégroz, had made it 3-0. Goals from Menayo and substitute Navarro then sandwiched a close-range finish by Amira Arfaoui.

Switzerland had barely been out of their half when the two-time winners of the WU17 crown – appearing in their fifth final – broke the deadlock. Natalia Montilla crossed for García, who finished easily for her fifth goal of these Icelandic finals. Monica Di Fonzo's side conceded again from Aitana Bonmati's corner which García rose to head off Swiss right-back Luisa Felder and into the net.

Spain's 2010 Women's U17 triumph

The Alpine team were stronger after the restart but Menayo swung in a 50th-minute free-kick which the unlucky Mégroz turned into her own goal. Reuteler soon cut the gap, letting fly a perfectly clean shot into the top corner. However, sloppy Swiss play led to a fourth Spanish goal. Menayo intercepted advancing goalkeeper Nadja Furrer's intended pass for her centre-halves and lobbed Furrer from 30 metres.

Replacement Arfaoui sneaked in at the back post late on to turn home Mégroz's corner, only for the 757 spectators to see Spain get the last word two minutes into stoppage time, Menayo cutting inside Thais Hurni and Sarah Kaufman to tee up Navarro's clincher.
